Using 2 leads

When I make music I usually just go with what sounds good but are they're any rules you go by when using 2 leads?

There are no rules for that - why should be? You can do anything you want with it - layer it for example, or let the first play the first and other the second part, or (and this can get really cool) merge them playing one melody and one is "answering" each other
I'm sure you can figure some more ways of usage. Automating, crossfading between them etc. Just be creative and have a good time! There don't have to be "rules" for everyhing, right?

If you are looking for ideas on how to structure the two parts (lead 1 and lead 2) then you might consider studying counterpoint aka applied harmony.
