Stutter effect and beat position

What I'm wondering is when someone puts a stutter effect on a word somewhere in a bar what do they usually do with the beat? Do they just mute it until it lands on a kick again or do they move the beginning of the beat to where the stutter ends. This is my first post so some insight on how the more complicated stutters are done would be cool or maybe even a link. Thanks

My guess is that they mute the beat and just have it timed right so it unmutes as the stutter effect ends. I guess moving the beat up could work but it might sound a little weird.

Your choice, but you should chop up the vocals with a 'snap to grid' or quantize on so that you stay on the beat. Then, you can make minute adjustments if you so desire.

It's a good idea not to mess with the timing of the beat.

I have yet to do a stutter effect, but its def something i should try out sometime soon.. my beats sound good, but i never really thought about it before..
