Struggling with finishing stuff as a beginner, and looking for honest feedback?

I suspect a lot of artists have many projects left unfinished, you just never hear them. That in of itself isn't an issue. Never finishing any is probably an issue.

It is a problem because you never really advance unless you have been through the whole process of making a piece of music. Once you complete a piece of music you can look back and get an idea of how all the things you did on the way resulted in the finished track. If you never finish a track you never have that perspective so you get stuck.

So it's better to get a track finished even if it's not great.

Mostly that is just basic composition. Take what elements you have and copy and paste them around until you have at least a beginning, middle and end. Don't be scared to repeat stuff. Once you have that overall structure you will listen and start to get ideas for what it needs to finish it off, how to tweak it to break up that repetition.

Remember it doesn't necessarily take that many elements to make a track. 1 thing is a part.. 2 things is a part and accompaniment...3 parts is a piece of music.

Also, if you do have lots of concepts hanging around, figure out a way to stockpile elements and ideas in some way so that you can quickly audition them and reuse them. This way little concept projects are never a waste of time. You can take a synth patch out of it and use it for something else. A big part of production is being smart about how you work.
