Separating sounds?

Hi there,
I have just bought Cubase 5.0. Now the next steps will be a soundcard and a nice synth. I would like to know if it is possible when using a synth or maybe just cubase to separate sounds so that I can have the sound of the bassdrum on channel 1 of my (Behringer MX 2642A) mixer and the sound of the clap on channel 2 etc. Is this possible with every soundcard or do I have to have a soundcard with a breakout box? Also what soundcard would you recommend around 200-299 pounds? I am told that Soundblaster soundcards are not good to make music. I was also told never to buy the guillemot Isis because it doesn't work well with cubase 5.0, and the soundquality is poor. Is this true? Sorry for all the questions, but as I am new to all this I need all the help I can get.
