Neo Soul - Which scales is it based on?

Whadduup everyone,

I'm a piano player and want to start to learn to play/improvise Neo Soul style piano playing. Neo Soul music with artists like D'Angelo, which scales is it based on? Gospel scales? Jazz?

Neo Soul uses a variety of scales,

but the most popular seem to be

minor pentatonic, blues, minor, mixolydian


Neo Soul seems to be more derived from both gospel and jazz, similar to classic R&B.

The style seems to be based more off of feel than the right scales though.
 
Thats about accurate, also take note that there is quite a bit of modulation that goes on within the neo soul grooves.
 
I wanted to start making some neo soul stuff too. I was playing around with some stuff, and I found that along with the scales mentioned above, I found that maj7 goes really well with neo soul.

yea neo soul is gospely jazzy..i play keys a lil bit too and i play with others players..and basically what everyone says is neo is more 'feel' then anything
