Metatonal Music: What is it?

never heard that word in particular, but meta- means "beyond" kind of... like "metacognition" means thinking about thinking... kind of a thinking beyond thinking...
so from that, I would venture to say that it's music that supercedes tonality. It goes outside the realm of tonality, but it still in it's own world the music is tonal. Tonal in the sense that it follows it's own rules of tonality.

...
just a guess, but maybe someone can give a better definition.

There are a few things, actually:
Firstly, the precise pitch of a note varies depending on the notes with which it is resonating. For example a G# on it's own is a slightly different pitch than a G# resonating with an E, and those are different than if they were resonating with different notes, etc.
Look for videos explaining the Tonal Plexus instrument. There's one a little under 7 mins that always comes up when I search that explains it very well.
Also there are different sets of divisions of notes between octaves other than the standard universal diatonic system. For example guitars that have 24 frets to an octave rather than 12 with notes halfway between the normal notes (quarter steps as opposed to half steps) and all kinds of other more complex divisions.
