I'm watching a melody tutorial video but having difficulty understanding what the guy is saying on one area between time frame 0:30 - 2:23 YouTube What does he mean by most noobs have their notes too far apart and their melody starts before the downbeat, in the same time frame (2:10) he starts the melody on the end of the bar to demonstrate this theory however he contradicts himself by not following that principle in 5:23 - 8:10...Can someone clarify what is being said because i'm a confused beginner lol

As far as the notes being too far, he's talking about semitones and whole tones. A semitone is a half step from one note to the next ex. F#- G is 1 semitone; F# - G# is a whole tone.
    ex. C#- A - F - B (Too far of a leap; Not good)
    ex. C#- E - F - G# (The notes are much closer to each other in tones (tones-note on a piano/staff); Better)

He then goes onto talk about linear space as in beats 1, 2, 3, 4 (1 Bar).
So you're melody should start before and overlap the down beat (beat 1).
