How do you come up with a melody?

Also one thing I can't stress enough, took me a while to learn and I forget from time to time- don't be afraid to use the same key more than once in succession.

Ex. don't be afraid to go A C DDD C A or something like that.

I know with me at least, at first I never used the same key twice in a row until I started studying melodies from songs.

When listening to a lot of Rihanna's stuff I noticed that, and mentally added that to my melody writing toolbox.

I use FL Studio 10. And I sometimes just see how I feel or the vibe I have at the moment, and produce a drum pattern to go with that vibe, then I begin to play 1 note as I go thru my sound (kit or vst presets) and when I find something interesting, I press a few different keys, see how they sound and either stick with it or keep it moving. Music is a creative process, so if what you're doing feels more like stress and a challenge than fun, passionate creativity, I would switch the sound or even sample something and try to match the pattern of any part of the sample. Hope this helps a bit.
