80's 90's R&B sounds

what are some sounds, and techniques used in the 80-90's R&B sounds... talking more of groups like SWV, Total, Jade (don't walk away) etc... whats the best way to start making some songs sounding in this element?
list any programs, VST's etc thanks guys^^
 
anything korg related will help you out , even try rob papen's albino vst , i noticed alot of 80's 90's synths in there
