Rode microphones are supposed to be good quality mics (I have a Rode NT-2); so you should be happy with your buy.

that plastic thingie surrounding the mic... i beleive its called a shock mount right? what does it do? and i took mine off of my nt1, and tried to put it back on... but i dont think i did right ... will that make it less effective?

That's right, it's called a shockmount. What the shockmount does is that it lessens movement with the mic. It keeps the mic from moving around too much.
