Vocal Booth - Which Mic? How to connect 2 PC?

Hi Folks,

I'm new to FP! 'ello! :) I'm just in the process of completing my home studio and I have a bit of a dilemma!

I've moved rooms and there is small storage cupboard that I plan to turn into a vocal booth. My music set-up is completely
PC based bar the small Spirit Notepad mixer. I use this to route the audio output from my Terratec EWS 29/96 card to the headphones + Servo amp for the monitors.

My budget is ~£100-200 for the mic then i'll need things like a stand,pop-shield, cable (~5m), and maybe a pre-amp? unless I can use the notepad mixer?)
Anything else?

The mic is gonna be used for voice overs / rap / female vocs -
Rhode NT1 or Audio Technica AT4033 ok?

Also what's the best place to buy on-line?


(sorry to ask so many questions for my first post!)

Any help much appreciated!

Update!

done a bit more research! Came across this rather cool article that takes you through the process of recording vocals on a pc:

(seems I can use the send FX on my mixer to route the mic signal to the soundcard - sweet! )

The Rode NT1 is also shaping up to be my choice of purchase - seen many a good review and has also recently come down in price.

Have u checked out the NT1's bigger brother , the NT2? I think it's still going for GBP275 if u can stretch the extra 75 quid or consider the Studio Electronics C1 around 200 US, touted to be indistinguishable to the venerable U87 by some.

Just to say.

I ordered the gear from thomanns - NT1, Popshield, stand & cable. It took about a week but was well worth it! Here are few stages I had to go through to make it all work nicely:

* re-organised the storage cupboard. Padded it out with an
old bed and carpet. Ran a double duvet over the top to stop it reverb from the ceiling. The space is now pretty dead acoustically making it ideal for the vocal booth environment :)

* I ended up placing the mic in the stand at 90 degrees to the right with the pop shield only around 5/10 cms in front of it. (seems to work better - the manual said the shield should be at least 30cms away but i had limited space to work with!)

* On the mixer I routed the mix input through the FX send to the PC. Worked at treat! just had to carefully monitor the levels so that it didn't overload.Thanks to Sound on Sound for that tip!

* I found that the NT1 is very, very sensitive! It is true what they say about hearing your neighbours next door if you turn the amp up! I also found that I got alot of background hiss.To remedy this I used Sonic Foundry noise reduction plugins on all my recordings. This worked a treat and eliminated pretty much all of the unwanted noise.


All in all very pleased with the result. :)

I'll be posting some recordings up of the results v.shortly - free vocals samples of a guy called Mr Nigel!

cool vocals man...i got a "home-made" mic...not bad really...some old plastic mic shell...mic it self....cable...and my homeboy to put it all together:) I can't believe,there's almost no hiss...it looks awfull but the sound is reasonable....;)

NT2 is reported to have a much less hiss. Glad u managed to fix it with SF tho...:hello:
