Monitors vs. Headphones

What's your opinion on using headphones for monitoring? Obviously there is a huge price difference and it seems like using headphones can be just as satisfactory as using normal monitors.

Is it?

In a word, no.

Monitors are definitely worth getting as they will give you the most true representation of the actual sound recorded. I have tried mixing with headphones and have found that the mixes are very bass heavy. It is totally worth saving up that bit more and getting some decent monitor speakers. The Mackie ones are quite reasonably priced - check them out!

also if you use any type of space altering plug-ins like reverb you lose a little of it when you mix on headphones due to there proximity to your ears. and plus long sessions can ruin you ears. just a thought. peace

Headphones on your ears don't give a realistic "full spectrum" of the audio / frequencies your listening to.

Although, you can use them at certain points of the mix, just to maybe listen in a little closer to certain inaudiable low set effects you might have in the mix.

Headphones - good for taking a one dimensional listen for small details.

Go with Monitors, which one's.

They got a thread going on that right now.
