Powered or active monitors have built in amplification, That means you just feed them with a regular line level signal.

Passive speakers are just like regular hi fi speakers. They need a seperate amplifier to boost the signal for the speakers to output.

Reference monitors is just a tag given to speakers that have a flat and accurate repsonse to all frequencies, making them usable as a referrence guide.

The advantage that active speakers have over passive ones is that the built in amp is matched correctly to give the best sounding & most accurate performance.
