Can someone explain Subtractive EQ'ing.

I've been hearing about this lately.....how does it work and how can it benefit my mixdowns?

I think you might be talking about EQ cutting instead of EQ boosting? It is always best to EQ cut if possible, because EQ boosting introduces phase shifts in the signal.

In production, removing is a better tool than adding. As the man said, you intoduce new transients into the mix and raise the noise floor, never too funky for a good production. the other problem you get is when you boost certain frequencies, other sounds in the mix start to sound different or misplaced so you then have to boost them to compensate the originlal boosted freqs.
