I'm just curious. , is it possible to get professional studio quality sound out of a computer from just software? If so, in your opinion, what software is needed to accomplish this without external hardware? I have plenty of goodies, but I'm curious as to whether this is a goose chase or really possible as far as solely using one's computer.

protools mix3 no questions about that = mac
professionals use outboard gear with a computer also (90%)of the time ..
i track in protools but i buss compression and limiting and other effects to outboard gear.and use plugins ..best of both worlds .. nothing will beat mu manley vari mu for compression ..
