Is trap the latest trend in edm?

I've heard of it, sounds ok. Just curious how a trend becomes a trend? Seems like a music business expo or convention is where and how the industry (i.e. record labels) determine the next trend?

I think a trend is more like a phaze but none the less there are elements of different music taken from certain genres throughout time.

For example; we hear alot more trap drums, basses and patterns be adapted to "mainstream" music nowadays. In the UK there is currently a drill (which can be considered a derivative of trap due to the production styles) and bashment/dancehall trend.

I guess in terms of record labels/industry people finding "the next sound" is based on observing current music and seeing how "successful" these tunes have become, then emulating what the "average" listener likes about these particular songs.

(forgive me for all the "s)
