Should I use a Field Recorder for Recording Sounds Outside?

Also Would using a Shotgun Mic be a good idea? I don't have one, but would like to know although I feel like it is a bit of a stupid Question. Are there any other things that would be useful in recording sounds?

That would be fine. It depends on application. Are you recording sound effects for later use? Are you making films or doing video production, or just looking for material for samples to manipulate?

A great, relatively inexpensive stereo recorder is the Zoom H1, which also can be firmware upgraded to a USB microphone.

I use a dictaphone works just as well, and also worth getting some cheap contact mics for getting some of the more unusual sounds.

I personally use the Zoom h4n and I have never had a problem with quality. Anything Zoom makes is normally great so the H5 or H6 is probably perfect!
