This is music, its a living thing that can be hard to predict. Try things and you'll find clever and cool sounds, even if you weren't looking for it.

I assume you are talking about layering the drums. It is important that they lay pretty close together. You can run into phase and frequency problems, so it generally takes some creative EQ'ing as well. Don't be afraid to try anything though, sometimes accidental things turn out to be some of the best.
