Sampling "Sing a Simple Song" Drums

The drum break in the middle of this song by Sly and the Family Stone has been sampled many many times, for example "Deep Cover" by Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg. in this version especially it sounds like its a straight up loop of the drums from "Sing a Simple Song." I've been trying to sample these drums myself just to have some fun messing around with them but i cant get around the horns playing at the same time in the original song. I've tried sampling in mono the side where the drums predominantly lie but the horns are still there. Theres little sections in the break where its only drums that could be chopped hit by hit onto pads, but the way ive heard this sample used on many songs makes it sound like it was looped because the swing and feel of the drums is the same. If anyone has used these drums before and knows what to do, or if someone just knows what to do to and would like to help that would be awesome:cheers:

I guess the horn is also in the Dre beat a little bit but it isn't as noticable cause it has an other sample on top of it. just guessing.
 
The break has the horns panned to one side, so you sample the other side and the horns are less noticeable (still gonna be there)
 
Dre put the break in mono so the horns and drums aren't separated and then put an effect on it to where the horns sound like a slight whistle in the background and t's barely noticeable. Also, it sounds like that second example is an overplay. They basically just replayed the drum pattern.

Similar to what he said^, just use the first pattern of the break, then cut out the second part with the horns. if you feel you really need that second portion of the loop, and can't eliminate it with mid-side processing, (the technique should be on the forum somewhere, or elsewhere on the net) then just cut up the first part of the drum break.

What are you trying to do? Cut it into single pieces to make your own drum patterns or use it as a loop? sometimes those extra bits of what you try to get rid of add something extra to the beat. It doesnt always have to be super clean and polished.

Off the top of my head, this break was also used for the song by Shock G (of Digital Underground) for the Humpty Dance!
of course there are other drums layered over the break, but yeah. I think the break was also used on RBX's solo effort album, which had a lot of super dope production on it and was really one of the masterpieces of the 90s... overlooked, sadly.
