your top guidelines for recording with a condenser (light percussion, bells etc)

Please post your top guidelines when it comes to recording percussive non amplified sounds such as those heard in Clark's night knuckles (bells/ music box, keys scraping etc). Yes I know some of these may be vst's in this case, but what guidelines should one follow when recording such sounds with a condenser?
Ex: should one use some sort of foam shield or iscolation from room noise? A "blanket fort" around the object to prevent hearing reflections? record in a closet?

Any help would be great!
 
Ya, about the only pointer I would have is to try and minimize reflections. Don't record *in* a closet, but opening a closet door full of clothes adds a nice large absorber to the room. For a resourceful and temporary setup, use thick blankets, quilts, even duvets if you can.

If you'll be doing this a lot, treating your room is nice. Don't think you have to cover every inch of the room, either. Even 50% coverage of large reflective surfaces makes a huge difference.
