What elements should be mono and what should be in stereo

Hey all,

I know that drums should be in mono, but how about:

Bass
Guitar
Horns
Keys/Piano
Synth

But specially Bass. Should it be mono or Stereo?

The general rule is that if the source is stereo, record in stereo. If it's mono, record the same.

Peace.

imo Bass and Kicks should be mono. . . I'm not a mixing God, that I do know.

You can do what you want and it's not a matter of "should" but...

Bass is usually mono and in the centre. (Depends what genre you are doing though)

As for the rest; it really depends on what you are doing. Getting things not to clash with the vocal is a consideration here and I often have guitars panned to either side or a stereo piano to get them out of the way of a central placed vocal.

you can widen your bass by panning it a few notches away from the center. only elements that should always be dead center are lead vocals and the kick drum. but of course there are exceptions. everything else can be moved around. that goes for the rest of the sounds you stated.

on this particular track i made the bass lead is panned hard left and right. sorry if you hear mud. soundcloud can't handle super low end tracks.
