Starting with the manual is normally the best place... But no matter what you're using, the technique is generally similar...
1.) Listen with objectivity **
2.) Realistically visualize the "potential" of the mix **
3.) Hit stop
4.) Set up a chain that will give you the results you want
5.) Hit play
6.) Fine-tune
7.) Rinse, Repeat.
** If you can't do that part (the most important one) you might want to just send it off...
