    Good day People,

I have a simple question, when using a VU meter to measure the sound level of a certain instrument such as the kick.
Do you place the VU meter on the Master track and listen to the level or do you place it on the drum kick Track to listen to the level?

    Same as other meters— both.

I would encourage you to not watch meters other than to make sure you aren't clipping things. It really won't help you. You need to set volumes by ear. If you are trying to get to a certain volume, load a reference track and turn it down like 12dB and then mix your song to the same volume. Only watch peak meters for clipping. If you are used to paying close attention to meters this will improve the sound of your mixes more in one month than the previous three years combined.
