Question about Beatz And Vocals

I'm recording and EQ'ing vocals and when I put it on a solo it sounds fine , but when I put the beat on they drown out and I could barely hear them . I'm thinking its because I'm recording inside the beat file instead of converting it . and my instrumental is not clipping at all . should I put my beats on a wav file and record or is it something else ?
 
Ah right I see, so recording inside the same project file. That's fine but I think your beat may be using too much headroom in the overall mix. Highlight all your instrumental tracks and turn them down.

-18db is roughly equivalent to 0db in the analog world. So try to have your tracks hovering around this mark, the peak will go above this, that's what the 18db of headroom is for.

What mic are you using for your vocals? Condenser or dynamic?
