a problem with recording

i have edirol-ua 25 sound card and AKG 190e dynamic microphone.The problem is that mic input is too weak so i have to twaek the preamp gain to the maximum so the noise occurs!Is this supposed to be happening.am i supposed to hear the noise when the preamp is boosted?I didn't have such of problem when i was recording a guitar because the input was loud enough so i didn't have to boost the preamp knob too much?What is the problem in this case?Is this the soundcard,the mic or something else?

If its a 1/4" Input (Guitar cable type) then you should have it on "Line" or "Inst" on your pre-amp. If its a XLR cable then you would use the "Mic" setting. Make sure your on the correct setting, if not then I would have to know more to figure out what your doing.
