Pitch shifters

Hi everyone
I have started writing songs for female singers so I decided to make my voice sound female.I sing in a lower register then shift it an octave.. adjust formant etc and the results are quite acceptable however the main problem apart from latency is glitchy notes.
I have tried quite a few vsts but they all seem to suffer from the same problem ( and I cant afford high end gear).
So...what actually causes the "glitching" It might help me pre process the vocal prior to the shifter.
Appreciate any help/ ideas.

Hi Gregg
I have been experimenting using Melodyne to pitch shift an octave then a bit of formant tweaking then Izotope Nectars pitch shift
but only adjust the formant … It works well to get the right sound ..anyway it is only for female singers to follow.. they are quite happy with
the process
Cheers
