Theoretical knowledge about music production and sound engineering is also pretty important. Things like EQ, layering, compression, mastering. Stuff like New York compression, mid side mastering, etc. Not per se all very necessary for popping kicks but theoretical knowledge about music production and sound engineering is necessary to better be able to fulfill all stages of making a track.

Good kick samples is the key. After you have a good kick sample you can then move on to EQ it. But let's say for instance you have a bad sample... Not matter how much EQing you do, it will always sound like crap.
