Getting This Reverse Crash Cymbal Sound

Hi All!

I want to get a reverse crash cymbal as good as at the start of this song.

I put in (what I thought was) a good 909 crash sample and reversed it but it sounded a bit metallic. The one in this is so smooth and nice sounding. What would be the first step in achieving this then?

A better sample, EQ, compression?

Thanks!

hi there. Look changing sample can make a difference but personally i think that with nice EQing and a nice volume automation, it should sound pretty smooth!!!

Better sample and reverb. That's pretty much it. And sometimes the reverb isn't so much to make the crash sound better, but to help it fade more smoothly. Try to see if you could find a large bank of samples out there somewhere and just keep running through each crash until you find one that fits the sound you're looking for. Then maybe run it through Cubase (or whatever program you have), reverse it and throw some light effects on top and see if that gets you anywhere.

Yeah, I'm not even convinced it's a reverse crash. Do you have any orchestral samples of a crash swell using mallets?

Here, check out Radley Fricker (you can't make this stuff up):
