You at least need some basic equipment if you want people to take you seriously. If you search around you'll run into some good deals and bundles especially online!

I think if you go to studio for recording will be much better than recording at home but if you want to do this for practices. I think there are so many cheap products which will be good. As Shands says, some basic equipments are enough.
