How do YOU choose the melody for your singing ?

do you try singing it straight away and go with whichever melody comes ?
or is it better to write down the melody then try to sing it ?
i know singable melodys dont move up and down too much and are mostly made out of several shapes
but i'm having a hard time making a singable melody
its like the melody i make could sound okay with an instrument but it sounds cheesy when sung.
what is there i can do to achieve a better melody for vocals ?

I find it quite intuitive generally, singing whatever comes to mind until something takes shape but if you're playing with an instrument first try using something like brass/woodwind so that it plays in a similar way to the human voice rather than piano or guitar or whatever else

Akulli, you are making this more complicated than it actually is... It's not hard. Also, try listening to melodic music and learn your scales and solfege-that helps tremendously. It also helps to have a harmonic foundation to work from ie. chords or bassline. A good method of practice is to practice scatting over a two-chord vamp and see what ideas you come up with. Melodies always come easiest when you are working off of harmony.
