Nice videos. He didn't say anything mind-blowing to me in particular. But the responses he was getting were simultaneously hilarious and scary. It is almost frightening how much people don't know about these deals.

In the end, the deal was good for him. He is able to make a living from his music. He isn't broke. His account just didn't recoup (break even), like the majority of accounts. Most people don't get any money other than the advance because most albums do not break even.

This is accurate. The only difference is before the sales of CD's fell off the advance the producer got from the label was big enough to ignore the fact that 99 out of 100 times you would not see a single cent on the royalty side. Now in 2015 that advance money is minuscule so the producers need to pay attention to the publishing side because they're are far more licensing/PRO/synch opportunities for a record now than its ever been in the history of the modern music industry. Its no longer about how much a record sells but how much that record is being UTILIZED.

P.S. Since we're in the DTC (Direct To Consumer) era, its a good time for producers to create full instrumental songs and market themselves as artists (which they already are) so they can participate in the full 360 of revenue off of their music. Flying Lotus is a current successful example and you can look at the entire history of music in various genres for examples

That model, atleast to me, is probably the best model for music producers.
Not the create full instrumental songs part, but the whole create an album
where you are "presenting" a collective of artists with your body of work.
(ie: Dr. Dre presents the Chronic, Timbaland presents Shock Value).

It puts the producer in the fore-front as a personality.
