For a very limited time (in the case of Symphony 6, today! UK time) the BBC is making some nice recordings of Beethoven symphonies available as mp3s -- for free. (BBC Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda.)
This not like 'free' on bittorrent, grokster, etc -- this is 'guilt-free-we-want-you-to-have-it' free.
And, though it can take a while for those of us raised on 3 minute pop masterpieces to get on Beethoven's wavelength, just having it on in the background is good for you. Like Mozart and Charlie Parker, it makes you smarter just listening to him... (that's a joke but I believe it anyway.)
They're in single file format (one symphony per file) so they're on the big side ( ~ 35 to 60 MB) but it's the right way to listen to them and the musical pauses between movements are presumably all intact (rather that lost in the between-track netherworld that engulfs so many concept album transitions in ripped formats).
Hustle up, though, like I said, No. 6 will be gone in a matter of hours. No. 7 will be taken down tomorrow, etc...
