Hey Whats Up FP, I jus had a question to the producers or engineers that deal with Reggae Vox.(Mostly Culture and Lovers Rock)
When recording vocals do you Record One Solid track then double certain parts or jus double everything?

When Im in the studio recording artists, I find that the younger artist like to double everything where as the older artist more like the 1 solid take.

Love to hear what you guys or girls think

Thanks for the Reply.
I forgot to mention that. I normally double my Choruses and certain parts of the Verses. I really meant jus the Verses being single or doubled.

In one word: Experiment.

There is no general rule. If it sounds good solo or double...you (as the producer) be the judge.

To me...if an artisit insists on always doubling, tripling, quad every track...when it is clear to the ears that it would be overkill...I take that as a sense of insecurity and signs of a weak singer. I had that problem years ago with a backup singer and we would get into arguments about it (at one point I counted a total of at least 12+ tracks of harms and additional doubles)...especially since it wasn't even her track or project. In the end I made the final call and the featured artist and myself was happy with the final result.

In any case you and the artist should experiment...you may hear something that the aritst doesn't or vice versa...that's the point of doing collaborative work. In the end, it is a good producer who is going to make the final decision on whether vocal parts need a little extra.

It would all depend if the artist is one of my artist, or an outsider just paying for studio time. Most artist feel the need to double everything. I'm not a big fan of this practice. Instead of arguing my point, I'll let the artist double or triple his tripe out. Then I'll edit as I see fit in the pre-mixes. Most time they don't notice unless I point out the fact that I "chop-sui'ed" their verse. This goes the same for the dreaded "Ad-Lib".....................
