Raggae sound

Audio/youtube example?

At a guess, though, you are probably talking about skanking - the offbeat rhythmic scratching on the guitar of muted strings - the chuck-chuck sound heard so often.

Instrumentation in reggae can vary, but main instruments are

  • Vocals
  • Backup vocals including vocal harmony
  • Guitars
  • Bass
  • Organ/Electric piano
  • Drums
  • Percussion:
    • Timbales,
    • Congas,
    • Bongos,
    • Cowbell(s),
    • Tambourines,
    • etc
  • Brass:
    • Saxophone (Tenor),
    • Trumpet(s),
    • Trombone

Phaser
bright tone settings
mute the strings around the 7th to 10th frets
strum upwards rather than downwards - if a double strum then upwards first followed by downwards strumming
maybe a wah-wah if you are so inclined

Mix it up with neck, middle, bridge pickup settings and the phased positions on a Strat. play around with the pickup settings on Les Paul/SG
