    Yeah; it is a bit of a downer.

    Put in 1,000,000 plays and see your estimated return. Then imagine how long it would take you (realistically) to get 1,000,000 plays...

    but that's just spotify. There's also youtube content ID, soundcloud, youtube ads, website ads, iTunes/digital downloads, apple music, shows, gigs, merch sales, TV/commercial placements, etc. ...so all together it can be a good amount.

    and those numbers are going up too since that music bill passed congress and trump signed it into law. Before the businessmen in music were thinking, "hey they're stupid hippie artists, they don't like money so why give them money. they don't want it. they just want weed and alcohol..." ...so they've been taking larger than appropriate cuts of the artists money. But now they're required by law to pay up.
