Gliding Effect

I am trying to find out how to apply a certain affect to my production. It is a "gliding" effect that is used in a lot in rap music these days. It is most well known in Rick Ross' "The Boss" song, in which the background choir gradually ascends and descends in pitch. I know it is possible to use the pitch bend for this effect, but is there a more professional way of attaining this effect in my music.
