Pro Tools 9 muting?

I am new to PT9. Every time I go to silence a certain part of a track it removes that part completely and shifts the rest of the track to the left. It is getting very frustrating. I am trying to mute certain parts of tracks without altering the position of the rest of the track.

Any help?
