It's in the maual, but i know it's not easy to understand, so here's what i do.
Play/record my strings in in either real time or via step mode, play back the sequence and adjust the real time gate controller until i get it to sound right, then simply overdub the new setting into the phrase.
If you want different gate settings simply move the knob whilst in overdub mode, if you don't get it bang on get it as close as you can then make 'minor' changes in edit mode until it suits.
I used to get obsessed by checking and editing stuff in edit mode, but i soon learnt that the best method is by ear, after all it is music !!!!
