got about 1200 dollars coming to spend on some hardware

depends if you want a midi controller with sounds on it, or just a midi controller for messing with software?

If its somethign just for software then dont bother forking out for loads of extra features, just get a standard 25, 49, or 61 midi keyboard, with some faders and rotary knobs.

I've got an axiom 25, and its served me well, its also got pads and semi weighted keys, not too expensive either. I've heard Akai MPK's are nice and feature packed though.

I also would recommend the axiom series as an overall MIDI controller. With great feeling keys, faders, rotaries, and pads, you can't go wrong. They came out with that Axiom Pro series, I haven't heard from anyone how much better they are. My Axiom 25 is the hub of my mobile studio, and I have recorded whole albums from just that piece. You won't regret that investment, and they hold their value really well. Look into them.
