Smooth Kick and Hat sound

Does anyone know if the kick is played with an open hat at the same time (listen to example)? If so, how do I get that kick and hat effect. The kick sounds punchy and the hat seems to merge with the hat. Do you need reverb on the hat or something cause I tried this technique but the hat kick doesn't seem to merge and play well together. Or maybe there is a specific type of open hat sample I am suppose to use?

Example 1: https://soundcloud.com/thisisjaredjackson/orange-tesla

Listen to this track. I'm talking about the kick at 0:17

Example 2:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCfsV-ZBngU

In this second example, every kick has that hi-hat effect. First kick comes in at 0:38

It's called a downbeat open hi-hat (on the downbeat, numbers 1-2-3-4). Play it with a standard kick and a hum-kick/808 at the same time.

I googled it, not much came up for downbeat open hi-hat. Should I be choking the hi-hat and playing a closed hat right after?

Just place the opening on a downbeat (1,2,3 or 4), and put a kick on exactly the same beat. It will work on upbeats too (just listened to the "Jared" thing again and he's using it on the "ands"). The kick and opening are together. Hum kick added in that example. I'm having a hard time understanding your difficulty. Can you post a sample of your attempt?

PPS-- There is a lesson on YouTube about Hi-Hat "Barking;" you should check that out too (a style and term made popular by Aretha Franklin's drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHRF_-IOT2s
