I can't record through my 1/4in F to RCA M adapter

Alright, so I bought an adapter that looks like Amazon.com: Y Adapter Audio Cable Gold 2 Male RCA to 1 Female 3.5mm: Electronics (except the female end is 1/4 inch) a few weeks ago. I use it to connect my headphones to my the sound card in my computer. I recently bought a microphone with a 1/4 inch male end, and plugged in into the adapter and it did not pick up any recording. I tried messing around with some settings on my computer, and tried plugging the adapter into my second pair of RCA slots. Still no luck. I tested it with another mic that is known to be working, still nothing. Also I know that my sound card is able to record because I can record with my keyboard using my other adapter which is 1/4 M to RCA F. Does anybody know what is wrong? Do I need a particular adapter specifically meant to record? If anyone could help, that'd be great. ;)
