Digital vs Vinyl??

Ok, so i have a friend who is a professional DJ. im just starting out (ive been a producer for a while). he said i should go digital instead of vinyl, because you can still scratch, which is what im into, and youll have a better chance at being a successful gig dj.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?
can you list some cheap starter equipment for your opinion?
i got speakers and headphones so i just need the dj stuff.
thanks!

I cant list many dj items as im a producer and i mainly sample digitally, but its interesting to me that theres another topic thats in the exact opposite position as yours in this thread... as in, going vinyl instead of digital... the only difference i could think of as far as being successful is the fact of carrying all the wax with you as opposed to a million songs on an external hard drive... i think you should just go with what feels right... im sure many djs love carrying the records with them, the pride probably drives them... plus alotta people feel the wax is more authentic.... if i can list any equipment soon ill post it....

You could use Serato Scratch Live if you wanna do it digital.

It's probably easier than carryin' all the vinyls around.

But again, I'm not a DJ..

honestly im not a dj (ha that seems like the theme in this thread) but id go with digital. easier to navigate, can bring more with you, and no fumbling at the tables. just seems like the most logical thing to do

I love my tables. I use my m5g and a rane ttm mixer. But thats at home for me to play with i'd never take that out anywhere.

For clubs I have pioneer cdj 1000's and a djm808 mixer that I dont mind beating up. Its all on what you wanna do though just remember, when your out places, other djs might have to use your setup, or stupid people holding drinks might walk up to the booth/stand and possibly spill something, so you gonna wish that your set was one that dont cost that much. Best route is some pioneer cdj's + 4 channel mixer & serato.

serato for convenience. its dope being able to play a set on one deck.

nothing sounds like vinyl... but its not so travel friendly.

IMO The best thing as far as DJ'ing goes right now is Traktor with Timecoded vinyls. Allows you to scratch on real turntables with real vinyl but with all the mp3's on your PC.

Then again, there's a reason that CDJ's are now the club standard. All depends what you want. Hip-hop scratch battle DJ? Go vinyl. Clubbing? CDJ. If you already have a good enough laptop the cheapest solution is a MIDI controller. Get traktor and something like the numark mixtrack.

What's your budget man?

You would have to go digital in the sense of using Serato or Traktor. You'll still need turntables and a scratch mixer.

youll have a better chance at being a successful gig dj.

Having various types of music is the only "chance" I see of being a more "successful gig dj." Talent, networking, following, etc... are also big factors in being a "successful gig dj."

Do you have a laptop? You'll need that. You'll need Serato or Traktor. A Rane 56 mixer and Technics if you want to scratch. If you want to play CDs, the CDJ-200s are a good option.

Digital Does SOUND different than vinyl . ALOT DIFFERENT when you wheel it back its even a different sound. (if you really listen) Scratching real vinyl break records is better for me cause you can feel it . Literally Feel the music . even hear it when the needles on its without speakers.

But I do do Digital Too... Digital Is awesome for creating you own scratch records to scratch make your own combo of sounds.

Personally I think its all good. But for mixing and gigs i bring my Hardrive with me. For scrtaching i usually mess with the vinyl .

just buy interface like serato to dj and you can buy a pair of technics for at home vinyl ,vinyl is a nostalgic peice thats encentric with a dj period , if you are a dj you must own two turntables or at least one with vinyl ..

music in vinyl gets costly but serato has worked fine for me ive got two techs and i can find some stuff online but there are some cons such as you cant find some songs because theyre only put out on vinyl

I have serato scratch live. I used to play with CD:s but carrying all the cds all the time made me buy serato. DJ'ing is now much more easier and miscellaneous. Next thing to do is buy time-code vinyls.

I'm from the old skool when dj's could only use vinyl because thats all there was. Technology has made vinyl obsolete. It doesn't make sense to start out now as a dj that only plays vinyl. Whether you're from the old skool or not, you have to embrace the new technology like Serato etc. They take care of the whole digital vs vinyl thing as it combines the two. Bear in mind, big name record vinyl specialist shops like Phat Beats were forced to close down. Why? declining vinyl sales. Technics are no longer manufacturing the legendary SL 1200/1210 turntable. The writing is on the wall. Embrace the digital age or end up like the dodo.
RIP vinyl.

Just so that peeps don't get me wrong, I'm a big lover of vinyl myself. I've dj'd since the age of 14, i'm now 37. The majority of records I own, I have two copies of (for mixing, beat juggling etc). I'm reluctantly having to consider forking out for a Serato kit, but I know it makes sense in order to survive as a dj.
My post was not an attack on vinyl, but an observation i'm sure many agree with. I'm sure that in the same way cassette tapes are now an all but dead format, the same will be true of vinyl in the next 10 - 15 years, if not sooner.
Peace.
