yeah i agree, bands that experiment open up doors, which sometimes redirects the entire genre they are working with, or creates a whole new genre all together.
i dunno if this counts, but in my opinion bands like the lo-fidelity all stars are really a mix of rock and electronica. they drop a really simple beat in the backround, but also fool around with vocals and piano and guitar. check out their cd, how to operate with a blown mind, it's really good and its straddles the fence of rock and electronica.
then of course there's always any of the new radiohead stuff...
