Hi all,

I have been checkin this board straight for a couple weeks now, some sweet stuff. Especially the thread on starting out as a DJ. I have some questions as to starting out mixin music. Now, I am interested in mixing and I am not really concerned about scrathing. If this is so would the best equipment for me be mixin CD or get the hands on Vinyl? Also, are there certain tracks that just come out on Vinyl? Like certain records with just vocals and base lines that you can't get on CD? I been checkin http://www.plantdj.com for some equipment, anybody have experience with these guys? are they any good? The DJ packages there really caught my eye....anyway, thanks for readin and hope you can help out

I don't have any vinyl, but I went threw the same dilemma on what to start with. Vinyl does have alot more singles that come out with acapella versions as one of the tracks, which makes it easy to mix over another beat of a song. It basically all depends on what media you currently have. Do u have alot of cd's already? Do u have any vinyl? My decision was to go with cd's because I already had like a 100-150 disc collection. If I were to get vinyl I would be purchasing songs over again. So that alone made me go with a cd based system. I have the Pioneer DJM500 Mixer and 2 CDJ500 cd players. Pretty phat I must say, I just wished I mixed more...hardly any now. But there are alot of opinions about cd vs. vinyl and each one is valid. But since u don't require to do any scratching, I say go with cd's at first, then maybe later on if u want to scratch, start off with purchasing 1 turntable. Also depends on what type of music you are playing. If hip/hop stuff, then most people would go with vinyl. This is cause its alot easier to cut and scratching is alot used in hip/hop. Another concern is that if u start off on either/or platform, its going to be some learning time to go over to the other. I learned to mix on cd players, but I have tried turntables a few times and I was all messed up. But I know alot of people who have had the same effect but with opposite platforms.

Hope this helps u out a little...

Yup, all depends on what you really wanna do.
If you have a lot of cd's and almost no vinyl you'll want to get cd-players.
But, as there's always a but, if you plan to be mixing in clubs later, you'll almost always need to spin on turntables. Ok they have cd-players too in clubs, but 90% of the mixing will be done on turntables. That's because most of the "underground" or "club" songs are still only released on vinyl. And furthermore you have a more intimate feeling with vinyl. There are some things you can only do with vinyl and things that can only be done with cd's.

My best guess is : if you want to mix for fun, buy the equipment you own the most media of, if you consider going pro, turntables are inevitable.

Off course it's good to say the DJM500 and CDJ500 or Technics SL1200 rule the world, but don't concentrate on buying them in the beginning. Buy what your budget allows (one tip if you should decide to buy turntables, DO NOT buy belt driven ones as the are crap and lose their value very fast), and learn to spin on that equipment (you'd be surprised how many guys spend fortunes on good equipment only to find out a couple of weeks after that they don't like dj'ing). If you like it, and you learned it, then you can consider upgrading your equipment. This is a better way to learn to dj too, because you'll learn to mix on basic equipment (let's say "crap"). And once you can master mixing on crap equipment, the step to good material will be very very easy to make.

Hope I've helped
Peace

Hi djs!
I'm afraid that I'm only a little ( and young! I'm 14 years old ) Dj with a little "cyber" equipment. I don't have much money to buy turntables and mixer, so I use my computer for mix and for compose music. My pc is a Pentium II 233 Mhz MXX with 2 soundcards: a SoudBlaster 16 PCI ( I use it for master output ) and a SoundBoostar 16 AGP ( Bleh! ) that I use for monitor the tracks. I download commercial and techno ( my truth love! )and I mix them with:

Discosoft Home ver.
Mj Studio ( demo, for the moment )

I compose music with Sonic Foundry Acid Music ( you can download some of my music on http://digilander.iol.it/Mousemix ).
I registered to onlineDj.com because I want to know all the mixing secret that proffesional Djs like you could give me
Please, not consider me a child!
Bye and yuhu!

Hey Mousemix, why should we consider you as a child. Crap equipment or not, it's the spirit that counts. The younger you start, the better you'll be when you're older (off course if you keep doing it). Heck, I've seen dj's with equipment that I could only dream about and that can not mix a cake, let alone mix music!!!
As long as you love what you're doing, and respect the others, you'll get respect in return and everything will go fine.
As for the tips, I (and I'm sure the others as well) will be available every moment to answer your questions. I'll post some tips and tricks regularily on this board

Keep the spirit alive
Peace
Dj Thy

Thanks for the info! It helps alot. I was thinkin though, I have a ton of CD's, but also if I mixed cd's I could also burn my own sample CD's and such.... But, is it true that I can get some sample records on vinyl that have the latest club hits with just the samples like voice bass etc.... on them and remix them that way? I dunno, I am totally new Thanks for the help

Thanx Dj Thy :-)
Meanwhile, scuse my bad english ( I'm Italian ).
I have a problem with BPM: I know that if a track has, for example, 128 BPM and another has 60 BPM, for playing in sync I have to change 60 to 64. But If a track is 128 BPM and another is 90?
Please, don't ask me "Change track..." :-)
Bye and Yuhu!

Hey there! I am new to the world of DJing too! My advice is to spend some time in music stores just checking out what titles are available, which are popular, and what kind of tracks they contain. I recently did some research and basically, most vinyl (in particular hip hop) contains both an acapella and an instrumental version. This is good for the marketers of the record as it means DJs can use and re-use the record. Basically, the easier a producer can make it for a DJ to mix or use their record, the more likely it is to be played and therefore become a commercial success. It makes sense. I guess this is why most tracks these days fade in and out with drums only (especially house music), as this is the easiest part to beat mix. The general impression I have gotten from people I have asked is that vinyl is the easiest and cheapest way to get started in DJing. Let me know how you go!!!

His last post was on 12-2-2002. I wonder if he even remembers this site?

Man, the more I think about it...the more I'd like to know what he's up to. Is life good? Does he still dj? LOL...sounds weird, I know...but just a strange late night curiousity.

this is only a test....
