The Electribe R? not bad BUT... but you should get the S (Electribe S)

R is a drumbox.. but you can't "sample"..

The S is a drumbox, but you can sample! A bit like the MPC2000 AKAI. Great for the price.

The electribe's not that bad, but it depends on what type
of music you're doing and what you want to do with it. For
me, I don't think it pumps out enough bass, but if it did
that, then it would just be another 909 clone. The main
thing about the ER1 is that it's DIFFERENT, it's not your
average clone beatbox. The sounds on the ER1 are more
electro sounding (bleeps, and the type). Like what ManoOne
said, pass this up for the ES1 if you want to be able to
program samples or have drums that are more organic.

If you're familiar with the the 909/808/or even rebirth,
the ER-1 works the same way (step programming). Creating
beats with this is relatively easy. It has two audio-in's
that you can use 'thru' or program it into patterns. There
are plenty of programable banks (4 banks with 64 patterns
each), you can also buy smartmedia cards to store more.
Another thing intresting about the ER1 is that you can
tweak a lot of the sounds into whatever you want. THere's
plenty of knobs. One thing that bothers me is that they're
so damn sensitive. (ie. you twist waveform a little too
much, and you get a whole different sound).

Like I said before, the ER1's a matter of tastes. I don't
recommend using this thing live, the channels don't stay
mute when you change patterns, which gets VERY ANNOYING.
The er1's best kept at a studio enviroment. If I were given
a chance to buy it again, I would pass it up for the ES1. I
bought the ER1 before the ES1 was even announced.
Definately check out both the ER1 and ES1 before you buy.
See if you like how they sound.

You might want to check out the MC-303, I've seen those
things being sold used for under $300. Also, look for the
ER1 used online (not on ebay though!). you might find a
really good deal on them.

woah! long post...
hope this helps,

Thanks a lot man, that helps. I am kinda familiar with ReBirth, and I would like to have something similar to that if possible. Also, the Electribes are within my price range, so that's what I was hoping for. Thanks again for the info.

I was going to get the ES-1, but the more I look at the MC-303, the more I think that I would probably like it better. Also, the price is a little lower on the MC303.
I'm not really that worried about sampling... Personally, I think the ReBirth setup is perfect for me, but I know that those machines are totally out of my range...

I would strongly advise AGAINST getting the MC-303. It's really a ridiculous piece of gear. The sounds are so bad...and there's nothing you can do to change them really. Don't waste the money. I wish I hadn't.

first off, i would like to express my deep hatred for all thing's baring the mark "groove box". They are an apulingly bad series of machienary, and should not be considered as part of any purchase.
On the electribe thing, i usualy love all korg products. Since i got my korg prophecy, and then my kaoss pad, i've had great faith in their products. I have never heard of any korg product breaking or need servicing, however; i'm not really a big fan of the electribes. I prefere to have separate samlers, sequencers, synths, etc, and link them all into software, that way, upgrading is far easyer.

If at first you dont suceed

[edited: your image seems to crash Mac people using Netscape.. dont ask me why it just causes them to fail the loading... maybe its postmypic's fault..]

I don't know if this will be useful to anyone but it fits the thread. I started making music a couple years back with ReBirth and I still use it regularly. Recently, I began to take this hobby a bit more seriously and invest a few bucks in actual equipment. I ended up buying the ER-1 and the EA-1 and connecting them together via MIDI. I liked the Electribes because they were in my price range and I found the interface similar to the ReBirth RB-338 style. I personally love the sound these boxes make and their versatility is also amazing. I have been able to make some pretty decent trance sounds out of the EA and some very trippy effects with the ER. Basically, I'd say to anyone looking to buy equipment for the first time, these boxes are a good place to start. However, I will definetly be buying some more boxes (or maybe just look into some soft synths) in the near future to get a more well rounded sound.
