Hi all,

I've been walking around with this idea for some time and I didn't ever consider realising it because I just don't think I'm good enough. A few days ago I discussed it with a friend who is quite a fan of tracker-style music sequencing.
He was totally thrilled by my idea and as I began to think more about it I realised this might be actually a good idea, but before I put any real work in it, I need you to comment my dream :-)

Okay this is my idea:
I figured the problem with trackers is the lack of flexibility. You have to work with static samples and you can't use any effects like distortion or reverb in the tracker itself. So unless you're brilliant, your song will sound cheap.
Now there's Buzz but personally I think Buzz doesn't offer any of the simplicity and you can't see all the notes in one screen :-)

The problem with big commerial products is that they ARE big commerial products. They cost ALOT and don't offer solutions for people without a midi keyboard and a real synth.

So I figured there had to be a possible hybrid between these two. What if there was a program that allowed you to use virtual instruments (like the ones in Reason - a great program but too expensive for a poor guy like me) which would be controlled by tracker-like tracks and you could connect these to (again - Reason-like) effectmachines.

I won't bore you with the details (I wouldn't want any of you running away with my idea ;-), jk) but I have it worked out quite nicely and I think it might work.

Its purpose will be to offer a future for all you trackers out there (do they still exist?).

Please let me know if this sounds like a good idea. My main consideration is wether this program would be useful. If not, I would like to hear the alternative :-)

Btw. I should add that this program is intended to be CHEAP. Everybody will be able to produce his or her own instruments and effects with the sdk I'm willing to write.

Thanks for your comments,

Ben

And even 'Modplug Tracker' is cool....it runs in windows, not DOS, and supports VST plugins....

get it from the 'trackers' section

Thanks for your replies. I'm downloading dream station right now, so I don't know exactly what it does but I got a pretty good idea from the screenshots and description. What I mean is ehm. Well it's something like dreamstation, but with a more open architecture. And again, my program will be completely free :-). I think my program may have more to offer than dreamstation, because you're not bonded to only one type of synth. In general you're not bonded to any synth, any instrument can be used, as long as there's somebody to program the thing

I didn't know there were any plans for a new FT? And IT3 looks pretty stalled to me. But I'm sure they have pretty good ideas
