One main piece of gear would be an Akai MPC sampler, for all your drum tracks. Then you probably would want to buy a sound module, something like the EMU Proteus 2000 (you can always expand it with 3 more sound roms) to generate all the other instruments. These 2 would probably run you about $2000 new. All in all, it depends on how much money you can spend, and what your needs are.

The Mpc2000 is real expensive, plus their is a difference their is a mpc2000,and mpc2000xl. The 2000xl is more useful in the studio it runs $1500 to $1700.That is before you start buying sounds to load in the machine, don't forget you need to buy a biggerMB.This will extend the memory you'll spend $2500.00 just to have the proper set up.CHECK Me out in the buy-sell-trade.That is all you need if you are a beginner.

For sample-based hip hop your equipment can be very simple, because you are relying on your creativity.

The basic creative tools are nothing more than:

1. drum machine or sequencer (to "control" your sampler)

2. sampler (to record, edit, program samples)

3. audio source (from which to record samples

And if you're keeping things really simple, you can just run the outputs from the sampler straight into an auxilliary input on your Hi-Fi amplifier.

Nice comment! A worthy remark amidst the "Yo, you need a keybaord, MPC, mixer, Nuendo" " guff you hear on here.

Actually, some of my cafe table beats would have been nice if I'd been able to just add a little reverb.

natural reverb (roomsize, etc) is the key

try doing the same in a church and here we go for the reverb

Off topic but you can learn a lot in churches. A lot of "modern" churches record the sermons, so you have the big booth up the back with a lot of sound equipment. The women/men running them are usually kind enough to let you observe the process, too. There's stuff beyond religious data to be learnt there.

Most of what goes into making a good beat has more to do with you than your equiptment.

You can make high quality beats on expensive MPC's or cheap budget samplers.
You can make great beats with expensive software,or cheap software.
So keep that in mind before you put 25% of your college fund into equiptment.

I have extensivly used an mpc2000,Orion platinum, and a Zoom sampletrak.
They each have weak points, and strenghths, but the overall quality was about the same no matter what I used.
So Just do your research, and get what best suits your musical style, and budget.
