Allright seattle was cool...

Now back to work

What would everyone suggest to help the beat battle?

I'm already trying to figure out a scoring system to make everything a little more, i should have some stuff figured out by the end of the week..

But what do you think would improve the battles?

Should it be sample vs samples synth vs, synth?
anyway give me some feedback as i'm making it all up as i go along...

thanks!

Just off the top of my head..

If you go for a scoring system I think the following:

Production Quality - 0..10 pts - this would be how well the track is mixed down in it's final state (eq, compression, etc..) not how good the track is.

Instrument Quality - 0..5 pts - Are the instrument sounds used of a good quality? Do they sound cheezy?

Composition - 0..10 pts - This is your overall judgement of how good the song is. Is it catchy? Does it have a decent intro? This should score high if you feel the song has potential even with poor instruments or production quality.

Whoa Factor - 0..5 pts - is there something that makes you go whoa that XXX is Hot!

This will take a judge with some skill to do because you have to listen to for each factor on it's own. For example you will have to be able to separate good composition from bad production etc..

The points given and criteria for each could be hammered out in more detail.

Getting a predetermined set of judges would not be a bad thing, but judges MUST vote on ALL entries except their own.

The scores would be totaled on all criteria and averaged over the number of judges submitting scores and the one with the most points wins.

In the case of a tie, each judge ranks the tied songs in order of preference (including his own). This is done until there are no more ties. in the case of a deadlock, infra or mano has the deciding vote.

I'm sure there is room for improvement and it may seem complex, but I think with this system we could realistically have a full compo in a week or two. This might be a headache for infra because he would have to keep track of everyone's scores. Which is why I think a panel of 3 or 5 judges would be nice instead of we all doing it.

i got a weird idea which might make things interesting. we put up one little like 5 or 10 second clip of something and then you have to intergrate thta in your beat. it would cool to see how everyone sues it. but it would be hard to see if everyone did. anyways i just thought that would be kinda interesting.

on scoring i would say a panel is the best. this way no one gets more people to vote in their battles then others and everyone has to face the same "ears" so everything is at least 99% fair
(1% is for biased or just personal preferences)

with a points system how would it work for example with s simple system-(just to show my question) lets theses are the scores

Beat 1
vote from person x-
sound:9
creativity:6
mastering etc.: 7
hip hop ness- 9

vote form person 7-
sound:7
creativity:9
masterign etc.:7
hip hop ness: 9

Beat 2:
person x-................... i think you get the idea
will every category be average like for sound beta would get and 8?? or would you add every point? and is there any overall score, and how much is that worht in the adding of points

so i think points would be hard on infra and make everything really confusing.

oh and i dont think you should have sample vs: sample or synth vs synth cuz some people might integrate them. so i think everything should go against everything, cuz i dont think it matter what your style is we wanna find the best beat maker in the battle.

another idea (im just full of them today) is to maybe start ranking people and then seeding them cuz in the last battle some good beats lost cuz they faced hard beats and some not as good beats got further (not hatin on anyone everyone had good beats, sme were just better). I dont people shoudl lose based on the yours or anyones randomning picking.

yeah rankings wouldn't be too bad. so we'll be ultimately starting up a league of some sort and maybe this could turn into something, ya know....maybe.....i guess only time will tell....

1)Strongly AGAINST sample vs. synth model.
I do sample but i play synth also. so where do I fit then? I can play my synth to fit the sample. Would you recognize it then? I can chop the simplest sample and say that i 've played that.

2) Building a beat around some given samples-great idea. i'm always for! I leave the scoring system to you guys-experts

3)hm...and we need harsh criteria for rhythms made out of pre-made sample cd-ejay-or-whatever drumloops.

i think every battle should have a topic for example one competition have latin flavored hip hop and then the next have beats with string instruments.....i also like that scoring system somebody already brought up
