Forums such as this one wins over using a realtime chat due to several factors.

You are almost sure that hundreds of people will read your post, even people who are not logged in when you post. Also everything is archived, interesting discussions can be searched, printed, etc.. It is interesting to be able to follow and participate simultaneously several different topics.

Even on large scale sites, chat rooms are almost empty, and people leave the room a few secodns after they logged in. This board is very user friendly and
