why is it so hard?
everything about that era of hip hop is ill, but i cant seem to capture that feel like i want to. My main problem is the low quality drums....how did they do it. Is it just drum breaks from old vinyl chopped, eq'd, and a pitch change? Any tips? or any kits that would get me going in the right direction....i have an mpc 1000, turntable, i wont name everything but, i have what i need....any help would be appreciated..

I think it's about what comes naturally to you. I don't resample or overcompress nothing, and I usually have to jump obstacles NOT to end up with that 90s sound.

I think it's more in the tempo and the sounds you choose to use than the actual mix. Don't forget alot of 90s albums were mixed better than current stuff and were just as "digital" as the stuff we make now.

Two things that annoy me are people who are positive out of ignorance, and people who are negative out of bitterness. People who are neither usually get along with me and agree with most of what I say. People who are one of the 2 think I'm the other.

Man, I know by the 90's MPCs were getting mad popular, but the legendary sampler the SP-1200 was used for tons of 90's New York sh*t.
I heard DJ Quick say he used it for his 1st 2 albums.
I guess some west coast artists were doing it as well.
It samples at a max rate of 22k.
Now your MPC1K samples at 44.1k.
I can't remeber if or how the MPC1K reduces the sample rate.
I KNOW that if you get or have the JJOS2 for it than it adds this option, because I had it & used it allot.

I heard some producers say the SP12 colored the main sample in a way that made it sound like magic in the mix.
I hear more often producers say it gave the drums that grimey lo-fi sound & that it is why it is in the sampler hall of fame.

I think 'deRaNged 4 Phuk'dup' posted something worth reading as well.
A sample w/ boom bap drums comes fairly easy for me, but a composed synth beat is near impossible for me to do.
I can't play strings or chords to save my life, but I feel like I hammer out drum patterns w/ the best of them.

I got an sp-1200 vst plug-in that 'supposedly' colors your sound like that sampler.
I use to run my audio through it before it hit my sampler.
That won't help much if your coming off a record though.
If you want I can try & dig it up for ya. pm me.
If you don't have JJOS on your MPC you should it is worth every penny!

Thats all I got, but good luck finding the sound you want.

I'm just a kid that can't play West Coast whistles, so I talk about guns

to "capture that feel" you have to look at their methods. records sampled into a s900/950, sp1200, asr-10 or mpc60 was pretty common in the 90s. but honestly you shouldnt have any problems getting that "90s sound" in reason/cubase/mpc 1000/fl studio either. just learn your gear, know what knobs do what you want with the sound etc. it takes patience and time

^ StLuke good point!
Those analog reels are dope.
Allot of cats used a-dats back then as well, but most big studios had Ampex reel 2 reel tape machines.

Here is that SP-1200 VST plug-in.
I got 3 pm's for it.
Also, to the dude that had an apple, I made it a .rar so u should be good.

All I ever did with it was run samples through it to get a vintage sound, but it is a software drum machine.
I never have had an SP, but I doubt software comes close!!
